TECHNIC

The pigment is applied to a raised printing surface and the image is transferred to paper with pressing instruments.
As in ink stamping, the raised areas are printed, while the carved areas are not.

The printing surface is a plate in which the image is sunk below the surface. The recessed areas, consisting of incised lines and tiny notches, are filled with ink.
The image is then transferred to paper using a high-pressure etching press.

The printing surface is neither raised nor sunken, but planar.
The image is drawn with an oil crayon on a planar limestone slab or
zinc plate. These surfaces are chemically treated so that only
the drawn image holds ink.
